The Craft and Sustainability

The Making of Conscious Craft

The Hand
Made by hand. Made with intention.

Every Marté Egele piece is handcrafted in our Lagos studio. There is no assembly line. There is no rush. Each cut, stitch, and edge finish is executed with precision and care guided by a philosophy that prioritizes the material and the moment.

What emerges is not just a bag or an accessory. It is a record of time, attention, and quiet expertise.

Our pieces are made in limited quantities. Many are named after family and close friends. The intention is simple: that what you carry feels like it was made for you because, in every meaningful way, it was.

Our studio is small by design. But the work is built to last and to grow. Every piece is shaped by Lagos, by travel, by beauty in the everyday, and by a deep respect for craft.

The Leather
Close to Home.

Our leather is sourced from the founder's home city in Lagos, Nigeria. We work closely with local suppliers to select leather that meets our standards for texture, grain, and longevity. By keeping our supply chain close to home, we reduce our footprint and support the local economy that raised us.

Every hide is inspected by hand. Imperfections are not rejected, they are redirected. A scar or variation in the grain is not a flaw; it is proof of life.

The Cut
Nothing worth keeping is thrown away.

Marté Egele takes environmental impact seriously. We weave sustainable methods into every stage of production. Design templates and precise cutting ensure the most is drawn from every single leather. What remains is never discarded carelessly. Offcuts are sorted by size, color, and texture, then set aside for reuse.

In our Lagos studio, upcycling is not a catchphrase. It is a reflex. Leather remnants become key rings, bag charms, cardholder components, sample swatches, inlays and overlays for present and future designs, and material for art projects. We are constantly asking: What else can this become? The answer is always something unexpected and always worth keeping.

We don't claim to have it all figured out. Sustainability is not a badge you earn overnight, it's a gradual push towards being more thoughtful in every part of the business. From how we cut to how we ship, we are learning. We are adjusting. And we are committed to doing better, not just saying better.

The Detail
A Unique Language.

Marté Egele designs live at the intersection of African craftsmanship and global design, with a strong influence from the Art Deco period. The result is a design language that is instantly recognizable yet never overstated. Clean lines. Deliberate proportions. Hardware that feels substantial in the hand.

These are pieces designed in Nigeria and built to travel quietly confident in any room, on any continent.
